On 13 February 2017, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from a frenzied Korean fellow, came to Kuala Lumber International Airport airport receptionist in Terminal 2 Departement Hall. He said that someone took him from behind and slashed a mysterious liquid on the face. The receiver sent him to the airport’s medical clinic to be examined by physicians, but it did not take until less than 20 minutes later he had no response. He was gone. He was dead.
The fluid smeared on his face was a VX nerve agent, a chemical weapon that was categorized as a mass destruction weapon. Kim Jong Nam, North Korea’s half-brother, and supreme leader Kim Jong Un, was the perpetrator.
The order was probably ordered prior to his premature death. Following his business visit to Kuala Lumpur in Macau, Nam was set to be back home in the last two decades. He had stayed with his family anonymously. But the aftermath of his assassination was a lot of unwelcome publicity though he never stopped. He has been living in the Chinese city for the long-standing, hidden Macau-North Korea relationship. Macau is a city locating about 2200 kilometers away from the Kingdom of Hermit on the western side of the Pearl River estuary in southern China.
It is recognized as a great number of things, one of only two special administrative regions in China, one that is most inhabited in the world of the former colony of the Portuguese Empire, and what most would know about it are the Vegas of Asia. But this one more word has also been the foreign center of operations in North Korea over the last five decades.
The United States has placed a large number of sanctions on North Korea since the 1950s, including several other nations, which affected its financial assets and banking transactions. This prompted the Kim regime to follow other paths to communicate with the world outside. In the late 1950s, Kim Jong-un was arrived in Macao by a small group of North Koreans loyal to Kim Ilseng and the first one in the Kim Dynasty. Hong Kong. And Hong Kong. The multitude of foreign banks and the relative ease with which they could participate in illegal activities attracted the regime in both towns.
Remember, then, the Portuguese colony remained in Macau and the British colony Hong Kong. Both cities offered the North Koreans a favorable atmosphere but Macao, in particular, had a clear benefit, as you can see, of exerting greater power and influence over the smaller territories of North Korea. For their shady companies, this was a far safer spot.
The Chinese communists had been aided by underground operations together with the Soviet Union in the Korean War, and close diplomatic ties had since been maintained. Hong Kong also had British rule, and British people were allies in the Korean war with the imperialist Americans, so this was less the perfect choice. On the other side, Macao, who remained neutral in international relations and kept himself out of foreign disputes, was dominated by the Portuguese, so it seemed that Macao had become clear that the way ahead was in the next decades.
And the logistics center is their international market touchpoint. While there were unlawful activities, many were legal, including real estate acquisition, start-ups, and different standard products during that early era. In reality, North Korea’s economic growth was higher than South Korea’s. But, as we all know, this did not last until the 1970s and 1980s, with the Berlin Wall and Soviet Union’s breakdown, where a large portion of assistance, mismanagement by the government caused economic stagnation worsened.
This point stopped the Kingdom of the Ermites. Their illegal efforts seemed a feasible way out of North Korea and were in desperate need of funding. Macao thus became an even more critical part of its global government financing policy from the 1990s. With further black market trade, the drug trade, the transfer of counterfeit money, counterfeit products, and the purchase of arms systems, North Koreans have expanded their activity in the region. Now a large part of that took the form of a hidden North Korean government agency, named the Macau trading company Zaquan, which was officially responsible for the machinery and textile trade.
In fact, however, it worked like a criminal enterprise. It is said to be North Korea’s most strong overseas reservoir. Of course, Zach Wang and North Korea reject this, but several reports have backed it up, among them Aqua, a former North Korean agent claiming to have been training in the Zaquan Trading Company offices for six months. She was assigned to live in Macao and study Cantonese, which was useful to her for one of her many missions in the world..
The most notorious was the bombing, which killed 115 people in 1987 by Korean Air Flight 858. The Zuck was reportedly the planning base of many acts of terrorism over the years, including the fatal bombing of the Rangoon in Burma by Damian Mark. South Korean President Chun Doo Hwan’s assassination attempt. But it does not end there, since the government had a new chance in 1995.
The Macau International Airport was opened by Air Koryo, the state airline operated by North Korea. Tried to open a branch in the city that led to the beginning of a new stop-off Macao flight from Pyongyang to Bangkok. However, the frequency was normal, sometimes weekly, often monthly.
Essentially, there were no passengers on this flight, but that didn’t matter as it only mattered to cargo luxury products for the elite, including whiskey, brandy, and pigs. Instead, it traveled alongside contraband products such as falsified cigarettes, guns, heroin, and crystal meth, all of them supporting the regime’s finance. Now, the Portuguese authorities in Macao have tried to stop the activities of North Korea, but their attempts have been somewhat unsuccessful, not too surprising given the inability to monitor even local triads.
Whilst the Turf Wars got pretty insane, they were still supplied by Portugal, which is why it was a huge win for North Korea as it gave them the biggest boost in 1999 when Portugal handed Macau back to China as a special administrative area, just like Hong Kong had been two years earlier from the British. Compared to the previous Portuguese government, our country has more friendly ties with China.
We can remain here easily, do business, and request paperwork. He referred to their legal undertakings, of course, but it is a declaration that probably covers all of their activities. Now it was around this time that the half-brother, known as Johnny to his friends, Kim Jong Nam, went to Macao. He was formerly the Ministry of Pyongyang’s Public Security in North Korea and his father, Kim Jong Ill, was apparent heir. But then he was arrested after an embarrassing incident. He lost favor with his younger brother Kim Jong-un as chief because he had been using the fake passport to visit Tokyo Disneyland.
Johnny Kim still also maintained a friendship with the government, and it is now said that he had played a part in the North-Korea-outward ties with Macau. But the outside world was going to change it, as American President George W Bush coined an axis of evil as the word “axis of the evil” in January 2002. And he searched for mass destruction weapons and identified three perpetrators.
North Korea, Iran, Iraq. The turning point was that. As the involvement of American intelligence in 2005 was strengthened, the North Korean operation in Macau was also subject to strong surveillance. The Department of the US Treasury accused Macau Delta Asia Bank of being ready to commit corrupted financial activities by means of my account for the North Korean government.
Notice that the international banking system was not accessible to the North Korean authorities. Banks that have agreed to serve as intermediaries played an important part in helping them avoid sanctions. As a result, American companies and financial institutions have been ordered to sever ties with Delta Asia Bank, leading to the freezing of North Korean funds worth some $25 million. North Korea wasn’t glad about it and sought to collect the money desperately.
Now the truth is that not all the Delta Asia Bank operated with North Korea was the only bank in Macau in fact. Indeed, almost all Macau banks controlled North Korean assets. And bigger banks such as the Bank of China. But why has only one bank and a relatively small bank been targeted? Well, Delta Asia was a symbolic goal. American regulators have selected them because shutting down a smaller bank will produce less financial uncertainty when sending a message. It was a disruption and it served other banks.
The absence of any links with the illegality of the regime made foreign companies and banks reluctant to engage with North Korea. Besides the concern that the American banking system will be excluded, this established a sort of informal North Korea financial embargo. Now there was another justification for targeting only one bank, which was to avoid a clash with China while sending them a very strong message. Remember, the overall survival of North Korea largely depends on China.
